In the novel “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan a girl named Jing-mei changes her ways of thinking throughout the story. In the novel Jing-mei views her mother with respect and goes along with what her mother wants her to be and do. As the story progresses she starts to change and begins to focus more on what she wants to be / who she is. This turns into a resentment towards her mother as the story unfolds further. After that it fasts forward a few years and we learn that she has come to accept both aspects of herself as one whole, the side that her mother enforced and who she wanted to be. In the beginning of the novel Jing-mei is accepting and even proud of what her mother has her do. The novel states,“ in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. Every night Jing-mei would be given random tests and quizzes on various subjects and topics for her prodigy. This would lead to her first shift. In the novel it states,“ The test got harder… One night I had to look at a page from the bible for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. ‘Now jehoshaphat has richness and honor in abundance and… that's all I remember Ma’” (paragraph 13 Tan). In the following paragraph it states,“ After seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die. I hated the test, the raised hopes and failed expectations.” (paragraph 14 Tan). It then states,“ I had new thoughts, willful thoughts- or rather, thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not.” (paragraph 15 Tan). This shows how Jing-mei makes transitions against her mother's view and starts thinking of what she wants to be. This goes on throughout the rest of the story and through each one, Jing-mei becomes further turned away from her mother's view and more tours her
