“Two Kinds” by Amy Tan and “The Stolen Party” by Liliana Heker are both short stories that deal with the complicated relationship between mother and daughter. Both short stories have written about how the daughters are trying to prove their mothers wrong on how they are to live their lives because if they let their mother tell them what to do, they would feel like they do not have power over themselves and what they want to do. Although both stories have this in common both girls deal with the given situation differently by either taking the positive approach by proving their mother wrong, or by taking the negative approach. In the story “Two Kinds,” Jing Mei takes the negative approach by trying really hard to make her mother disappointed in her. And hey, she succeeded. Jing Mei wants her mom to just give up on her and stop trying to make her something she is not. One Example is when Jing Mei saw the disappointed look on her mother's face. When she saw this she realized that she was sick of all of the tests and raised hopes and the failed expectations that she experienced. She looked in the mirror and saw her ordinary plain face and realized that it would always be like this and that she should just stop trying to be something that she is not. After this event happened Jing Mei stopped trying to find a talent and just gave up. This is when she starts to develop her negative attitude towards trying things that her mom wants her to do. She loses all hope of having the American dream that her mother wants for her . She just wants to prove her mom wrong. Another example is when she starts to take piano lessons with Old Chang. When her mom tells her that she has to take piano lessons after watching a nine-year-old girl playing piano on TV, Jing Mei hates the thought
