Parents around the world raise their kids in all different ways. There is no guidance for the way that someone is supposed to raise their children. There is no set achievements for a child. Parents have different expectations for their children and some are harsher than others. In the story “Two Kinds” the mother is a bad parent, she is very mean and abusive to her child, has unrealistic expectations for her, and wants her to be someone who she is not.

First of Jing-Mei’s mother is a bad parent because she is verbally and physically abusive to her. In the story she takes multiple actions towards Jing-Mei that are abusive. These actions could hurt the way that Jing-Mei acts in the future. In the story it states “She yanked me by the arm, pulled me off the floor, snapped off the TV”. (Tan 10). In the story it states “One night I had to look at a page from the Bible for three minutes and then report everything I could remember” This is an unrealistic expectation, the mother wants her to memorize something in three minutes and expects her to remember everything that she reads within that three minutes.
