Joan of Arc is often recognized as a hero of France. She once said, “If I were to say that God sent me, I shall be condemned, but God really did send me” (“Joan of Arc Teenage War Hero with Visions”). Joan was doubted by many people and was thought to be insane. She was living in a time where women were not thought of as leaders. Joan had to learn how to prove that she was capable of leading an army. She refused to give up, and now she is thought to be on of the women who changed history. Joan was not taught to read or write growing up. Instead she took care of animals, and she also learned how to sew. (“Joan of Arc Warrior, Military Leader”) As a child, Joan’s mother taught her about the Catholic Church, and it started Joan’s love for the church (“Joan of Arc”). At 12, Joan began to hear voices. These voices made her think that God was calling her to help the French nation. (“Joan of Arc Biography”) The first time she heard the voices was when she was in the family garden (Jarus). After finding out that she would be held in capture by the English, Joan tried to commit suicide by jumping off a tower but was unsuccessful (Jarus). Then the English decided to put Joan on trial. This trial would be held in the city of Rouen. On January 13, 1431 Joan’s trial began. (Lanhers) She was interrogated almost a dozen times, but Joan kept her innocence and humility. She was charged with 70 counts that included heresy, witchcraft, and dressing like a man. (“Joan of Arc Warrior, Military Leader”) Joan’s first verdict was execution, but then was changed to life in prison after she promised to everything the church needed her to do.
