Joan of Arc was born in Domremy, France. Her parents’ names were Jacques d’Arc and Isabelle Romee. She was born on January 6, 1412. She was born into a farming family in her small isolated patch of France. She lived a normal childhood, with the exception of her visions. When she was a young girl, around the age of 12, she saw visions of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. They told young Joan to drive out the English, and bring the Dauphin to Rheims for his coronation. She was astounded and shocked at seeing the beautiful figures. She admitted that she would rather be at her mother’s side, but it was the right thing to fulfill the Lord’s will. After years of loss, the king finally allowed Joan to lead the army. She eventually was victorious and ended the hundred year war. After she saved France, she was ennobled by King Charles the seventh for her brave actions and her service to France. Joan was captured on May 23, 1430 during the skirmish with the English and Burgundians. She was imprisoned at Beaurevoir Castle. She tried to escape many times, even jumping from her 70 foot tower, but none of her escape plans worked. She was moved to the Burgundian town of Arras after her last escape plot. The English made an offer that the Burgundians just couldn’t refuse. They offered to pay the Burgundians a large sum of money in exchange for Joan. The English moved her yet again to a different prison in Rouen. Joan was on trial for over 14 months and she was eventually wrongly convicted with witchcraft, heresy, crossdressing, and many more charges. She was martyred on May 30, 1431.
