Joan of Arc had an important role in the Hundred Years’ War for a French peasant girl who basically led France to its victory, and was able to save the monarchy. During her teenage years, Joan started to hear voices, which she claimed to be the voices of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. Later on, those voices spoke to her telling her that the dauphin had to be crowned and that the English had to be expelled from France. She had many obstacles in the way but in the end they were convinced. The French believed her, because the court believed that only a miracle could save the country.
Joan of Arc was a simple peasant girl the youngest of five children born into a family of pious parents whom worshipped God in a in a village near the province of Lorraine, in a far off village known as Domremy. Joan having been born a peasant and in a village, not in a city had very little education and with there were being two different factions of the French people following the two different kings, Kings Charles VII and King Henry V. Even with Joan’s little education, she believed that King Charles VII should be king because she had been given messages from the visions received from the saints of Margeret, Catherine and Michael that Charles was the one true king chosen by God. She was also influenced by her mother because she was a devoted catholic and she showed her the teaching of the Catholic Church. When Joan of Arc joined the battle of Orléans, the tides went in their favor of France. King Charles give Joan weapons and a small army. On April 27, 1429, she set out for Orleans, that taken hold by the English since October 1428. On April 29, as a French group distracted the English troops on the west side of Orleans, as Joan entered its eastern gate.
At this time Joan was only 18 years old. There were several battles that took place between May 4 and May 7 until the French took control. She led several assaults toward the Anglo-Burgundians until they finally retreated across the Loire River. In the heat of one battle Joan was wounded, but later returned and encouraged her army to finish what was left in the battle. After the victory at Orleans, Joan was nicknamed “The Maid of Orleans”.
It is said that she showed a strong sensitivity and respect for the ways of God and her friends described that ‘she was greatly committed to the service of God and the Blessed Mary’. At around the age of 12-13, Joan started to experience ‘religious visions’. These started off with voices that were just general, telling her to live a ‘virtuous life’. Joan of Arc said she had visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine telling her to support Charles VII in recovering France from English domination late in the Hundred Year War. Charles VII sent Joan of Arc to the siege of Orléans as a relief mission.
Joan was only 18 or 19 when she died. Many who supported her believed that her death was a powerful witness of her commitment to God. When her sentence was to be carried out, she begged two priests, Father Martin Ladvenu and Father Isambart de la Pierre, to hold a crucifix before her as she burned so that she could see Jesus Christ. The English burned her body twice so that her remains would be completely ash and cast them all into the Seine River in order to prevent any collection of relics. Because of their actions they reveal that even the English thought of her as a saint.
When she was the juvenile age of twelve she had her first inspiring vision of saving France. The voice constantly reminded her that she needed to go to church, it would tell her that if she did she would have divine powers helping her with France’s war.
