By putting this recommendation into action now, I expect to become more connected to my coworkers, more visible to upper management, and more capable of making effective decisions in future leadership positions. Finally, my third change will be taking a more energetic approach to furthering my education, so I am able to have the skills I need to make effective decisions with the two-up, two-down approach in mind (Schmalz, 2015, np). As an officer, I would contribute to its legacy of responsible leadership and continue to uphold the goals of not only our chapter, but also the entire organization. It is important to be involved and enhance business skills in order to thrive in the future, whether it be in business or not. Using the power and influence of an officer will further empower me to help lead the members with the other
Effective Leaders The question “Would you rather be feared or respected?” is often asked when discussing how to be an effective leader. The war novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien proves that leaders who are willing to compromise and listen to others when making a decision are more effective than leaders who are unwilling to compromise. Tim O’Brien was a soldier in the Vietnam War, who was in the same platoon as Jimmy Cross (Lieutenant), and other soldiers such as Kiowa and Curt Lemon. After the war ended, O’Brien went home to Minnesota and wrote different stories about his experiences in the war.
The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about leadership but at the same time there is a lot of drama. Jack sets his priorities of having fun and hunting pigs, but Ralph is the complete opposite. Ralph is the kind of leader that thinks about the people first for example, he wants to build shelters and keep a fire burning for a sign of rescue for nearby ships. Both Ralph and Jack make excellent leaders, but they have different styles and different priorities. Ralph displays useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the good in the boys society.

Leadership is the action of leading a group or organization. To be an effective leader one must be honest, trustworthy, and contain a large amount of integrity. The traits and qualities of an effective leader were taught to me during my time in JROTC. JROTC stresses its core values of honor, courage, and commitment to all of its members. Cadet's are expected to uphold these three values in every aspect of what you do as a cadet in this program.
In his book, Tom Rath (2008) discusses strengths based leadership and reviews the data from the Gallup StrengthsFinder assessment and examines the domains of being an effective leader and why people follow leaders. Rath (2008) finds: the most effective leaders are always investing in strengths, the most effective leaders surround themselves with the right people and then maximize their team, and the most effective leaders understand their followers needs (p. 2-3). He reveals teams are formulated from four domains of leadership strength: Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking (Rath, 2016, p.23). Effective leaders know their strengths and combine them with skills and expertise to achieve optimal results.
Leadership Thought Prior to 1900 The earliest study of leadership thought would be the “Great Man Theory. This theory conceptualized leaders as a single “Great Man” who knew everything and influenced others to follow him. In leadership discourse, the Great Man theory—an assertion that certain individuals, certain men, are gifts from God placed on earth to provide the lightening needed to uplift human existence—is associated mainly with Thomas Carlyle (Spector, 2015, p.250). The focal-point of this theory is that leaders’ skills are inherent and set that them apart from those around them and that these traits enable them to assume roles of power and authority.

There is still a probability that they might not speak up and are afraid to truly express their thoughts and feelings. Introduction Team leadership encompasses many things. It may seem like a simple and small task, but in a real sense, it is complex and comes with responsibilities, and commonly, it determines the success of any team or a group. However, the value of teamwork should not be overemphasized considering that all organizations need individuals and personnel who are willing to share ideas, listen to others and contribute to the problem solving of any given group or a company.
