Today, we live in society filled with differences. People have different opinions, different looks, different morals, and the list goes on and on. John Courtney Murray, a theologian, philosopher and influential Catholic, states his beliefs on our society filled with differences throughout We Hold These Truths. Murray wants people to become aware of the differences that we as Americans hold in society. He thinks that if we can understand what others believe in and what others feel than we have a greater possibility of unity. With conversation and dialogue we can clarify our disagreements and make a clear standpoint on where we stand with our ideas. He believes that in order to connect with others you have to understand their beliefs, meanings and framework. I agree with his belief that conversation unites people, even when we disagree. I believe that our class on Catholicism and Democracy is a prime example of this. Over the course of our discussions in class we bring up many debates and discussions regarding different thinkers and Catholic teachings. Our class exemplifies how all Americans do not have the same basic moral principles, yet we have some similarities because we are able to function and discuss our ideas in a pleasant manor. Without some sort of basic agreement our class would be chaos and it would not function properly. Yet, all students voice their opinions freely. Part of our American freedom, which is thus brought forth in our class, is that people are able to express themselves freely. Our class as a whole is constant group conversation, which sparks public agreement and argument at the same time.
