John F. Kennedy was a visionary and ethical leader. His vision of putting man on the moon was not an easy task. He first had to use change management techniques to change the American people’s thoughts of the Apollo program and then full range leadership to gain the support needed. President Kennedy then showed the world how he was an ethical leader when faced with the Cuban missile crisis. His uses of reflective thinking and the consequence test enabled him to take the right course of action to overcome the threat of nuclear weapons being built on Cuba. And just like President Kennedy, I am faced with visionary and ethical leadership situations. According to the Office of the Historian, President Kennedy summoned his closest advisors to come up with a course of action the United States should take. Some of the advisors pushed for an aggressive bombing campaign followed by a land invasion of Cuba. Others pushed for a more political approach by giving stern warnings directed at Cuba and the Soviet Union (Office of the Historian, n.d.). With all the options now on the table, President Kennedy had to decide what course of action to take. To do this, he used reflective thinking. According to the Barnes Center, reflective thinking involves the leader to consider multiple perspectives to a problem so they can make an informed decision (Thomas N. Barnes Center for Enlisted Education, 2016). This meant President Kennedy had to consider things like, can the economy support a war and how will the American people react to the decision. Additionally, President Kennedy used the consequence test to determine the possible outcomes of his course of action. He saw the possibility of starting a nuclear war with a military attack or risk the Soviet Union viewing the United States as not a threat if he chose a political approach. After thinking critically and ethically, President Kennedy went with a naval quarantine to stop any soviet ship containing nuclear missile supplies from reaching Cuba.
