President took office in January of 1961 and was assassinated in Dallas in the year of 1963. There are many things he left behind him though after his assassination. Many of the policies and such left behind from him and his administration are remembered as possibly one of the greatest presidency’s even in such a short term. However, when compared to previous presidents that were assassinated and the legacy that they have left previously. Kennedy had a lasting impression to present day through the good and bad. His first was the creation of the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps was one of his plans when going through the election and he followed through with it . This was another idea of containment that would send willing civilians to foreign countries to help less privileged countries with whatever else they may need. Also, an attempt of containment that failed miserably was the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. The United States trained 1400 Cuban exiles to attack Cuba and kick the communist government out. This attempt was created during the Eisenhower administration and did not work. The exiles were killed or captured almost immediately. This event was a major knock against his presidency. People claimed Kennedy should have known better but was his inexperience the reason for this blunder. President Kennedy had the plan to meet with Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev saw this opportunity to exemplify Kennedy’s inexperience when they met in Austria in 1961. Nikita flexed his experiences over Kennedy, the president lost the talks even when Nikita said “If the US wants to start a war over Germany let it be so." After the meeting with the communist leader Kennedy had to re-think his ideas and standards to neve be beat around like that again. This was a factor of the Iron Curtain over East Berlin that was controlled by the Soviets. Plus this is what Khrushchev was so set on fighting for and keeping in communist possession. This issue also just magnified the severity of the Cold War during this era. President Kennedy was also big in racial matters and ending segregation. In 1962 the Supreme Court stated it was unconstitutional to keep public transportation segregated.
One of the scariest things for America throughout its history was the Cuban Missile Crisis. One of the issues to start this was the fact that Cuba was a communist state. Also, in February of 1962 he ended all trade with Cuba which still stands today. On October 16th President Kennedy was informed of the missiles being placed in Cuba from the Soviet Union. Six days later, October 22nd Kennedy Informed the United States public about the issue.
