Poems are used to express feelings towards another person, towards nature, towards themselves. John Keats a British poet who wrote to romance, he was one of the main figures of the second generation of Romantic poets. Keats aimed to accentuate extreme emotion through the emphasis of natural imagery. John Keats was born on October 31, 1795. He was the oldest of five siblings. He lived a happy childhood in North London. His father Thomas Keats and his mother Frances Jennings who were hard workers. John was a very unique boy. Keats was 9 years old when his father fell off his horse on the way home and died several hours later. In March 1810 when Keats was 14, his mother died of tuberculosis. His grandmother then took care of him. John Keats wrote his first poem at 19 years old just before his grandmother died. Keats wanted to be a poet but he knew that poetry is a privilege to the wealthy who do not have to work and can afford to indulge in word play. Technique and common sense was in the past prized higher than inspiration and passion. Romantic poets began to bring up but their works were still disliked, it was very hard to make a decent living. There was also another popular form of poetry that tried to be romantic but they failed. Keats follow the work from a poet called “Leigh Hunt” which he admired. A friend of John Keats had some of Keats poems who he showed to one of his friends which turned out to be Leigh Hunt. John Keats wanted to work in the medical field but he was more passionate about poetry so he decided to end his medical career in order for him to stay focus in his poetry. Keats decided to try a long poem.
