The Beatles were a world-renowned English rock band that changed the face of music. Millions have idolized these men while being blind to their shortcomings. With fame comes fault. The dark side of John Lennon made its way into the spotlight, concentrating on his emotional abuse directed towards the disabled and his engagement in domestic violence (McGeorge). Although, his faults were brought to the surface of society, people were able to look past the wrong and see the right. Not only did The Beatles impact the world as a whole, but John Lennon stood out from the group as he continued to lead and inspire others. Lennon’s voice made me nostalgic for the late 1960s, which was odd, because it was the late 1980s and I was a teenager who had only known pop charts ruled by the likes of Rick Astley, Tiffany, and Belinda Carlisle. ‘Why doesn’t my generation have any real artists like Lennon?’ I asked bitterly… My dad shot because that he never understood why The Beatles were considered great artists…’What made John Lennon so important?’” (Levenson). John Lennon contributed to the world in more ways than simply music. Although, his song “Imagine” opened the world up to his heart. “Imagine” was released in the midst of the Vietnam War in 1971 as anti-war sentiments skyrocketed in the U.S.. The song “was a powerful ode to unity and peace that captured the feelings of many at the time. It was a clarion call for all those who dreamed of a better world- one filled with empathy and understanding, and absent of resentment and violence” (Levenson). Along with “Imagine”, Lennon released the song “Give Peace a Chance,” which became an anthem for the anti-Vietnam and counterculture movement. Following his departure from the Beatles, Lennon released eight solo albums filled with commentary on awr, inequality, and his desire for unity across all mankind
