Bernard Beckett, a New Zealand author, said “Human spirit is the ability to face the uncertainty of the future with curiosity and optimism. It is the belief that problems can be solved, differences resolved. It is a type of confidence. And it is fragile. It can be blackened by fear and superstition”. Uncertainty can either be beneficial or detrimental to a scientist. How they deal with that, determines how their career will end up at. Ethos can be a tenacious influence in writing. If a person who is well known for being right argued that a situation should be handled a certain way, it would be laborious to oppose that. When scientists are able to create structure and direction, people should realize that they are an authoritative figure which is what the author is trying to convey. By being scientists, they can use their skills and qualification to use ethos to their advantage. In conclusion, John M. Barry fortifies logos to manifest the scientific field of work. He argues that “The less known, the more one has to manipulate and even force experiments to yield an answer” (Barry). This helps support his use of logos throughout this excerpt because it shows that they use logic to make sense of what is going on with a given situation. They have to be creative, yet still be logical. If a scenario logically makes sense, there is not much that a person could contend against. They have to have a cogitate mindset. Barry believes that “It is grunt work, tedious work that begins with figuring out what tools one needs and then making them” (Barry). Barry is trying to get that scientists have to use logic.
