King Charles and the Anglican had corrupted England in the eyes of John Milton. He would constantly write pamphlets and poems degrading the English Church. Even though the English Civil War was over, Milton still shared his support for the Puritans. In 1667, he publishes a poem to belittle the Anglican Church, a poem known as the greatest English epic poem, Paradise Lost. Milton’s epic is considered to be amongst the other great epics such as the Iliad, the Aeneid, and the Odyssey. All the epics contain a long narrative poem that follows the adventures of hero throughout his bouts with warfare and the supernatural world. Typically, epics begin in the middle of a crisis, but the reader discovers past events through the hero’s flashbacks. The young Milton had two siblings, Anne and Christopher. The children’s father was a musical composer, and as a result of his high status, the family could afford a private tutor for the children. Because of the esteemed position, John Milton’s father left a lasting impression on his son and inspiration for many of Milton’s future works. When he was a boy, Milton enrolled in St. Paul's School in London, where he studied Latin and Greek, planting a seed for his future knowledge of numerous languages and influencing his love for writing. In 1625, when Milton was sixteen, he enrolled in Christ’s College, Cambridge with the goal of becoming a clergy. During a stay at home in 1626, Milton wrote his first Latin elegy, “Elegna Prima,” to a friend from St. Paul’s, starting his career as a writer. However, with the goal of still becoming a priest, Milton received his Masters degree on July 3, 1632 from Christ’s College. (John Milton
