John Proctor Reputation Analysis

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that,

you'll do things differently." - Warren Buffett. Reading through The Crucible written by Arthur

Miller, I have came to understand more about human society and its dark side. In this play, you

will see how caring too much about reputation can lead to hypocrisy and even the destruction of

your own reputation through the two main characters - John Proctor and Reverend Parris.

Arthur Miller did a great job portraying each characters and reflecting human's dark side.

Proctor and Parris are the counter-parts of each other. Neither Proctor nor Parris wants to listen

Next, we will see how both of them are affected by reputation. Proctor tries to conceal is affair with Abigail for

he is afraid his name would be blacken if he is discovered. Another thing is in act IV, he found

out after signing his name on the proclamation, the Judges are going to show the town people

his sins, so he tore the paper in order to protect his name. Unfortunately for him, he was hang in

the end. For Parris, like I have mentioned before, he does not want anyone to know his

daughter and niece conjoured witchcraft. He wants to appear well in front of others. He afraid

that his enemies will use that to go against him, steal his position and ruin his reputation. As a

consequence, he conceals every sins he has until the end and causes many deaths of innocent

people. He is a hypocrite if I say so myself.

In conclusion, what did we learn from these two characters in The Crucible? I have

learnt that caring too much about reputation will not always lead you to a happy ending. Proctor

caused his own death and Parris will remain as a hypocrite for eternity. How did they affect the
