Pursuit of Happiness essay! John Stuart Mill’s argument is to let happiness come on its own way, without dwelling on it or thinking about it. I indeed agree with his argument, but i also disagree with couple of his statements in his prompt. In my opinion happiness comes in varies of way but in order to truly have it you must wait for it to come in the right time, but also work for it. In the beginning of one of his statements he says “those only are happy (I thought) who have their minds fixed on a object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the the improvement of mankind, even on some pursuit, followed not as means, but a itself ideal end” i agree with this assertion. I as well use to believe that having my mind fixed on others happiness brought me happiness; until i discovered that i was happy for them but not happy of my own. John states that “ the only chance is to treat, not happiness, but some end external to it, as the purpose of life” I don’t agree with this assertion. I think we should treat happiness in order to receive it . Working on what you know will bring you happiness is a long term effect of happines. For example if i know being fit and healthy is something that will bring happiness to me i need to work for it as time pass by seeing my developments will bring happiness to me. “Ask yourself to be happy, and you cease to be so” he states; this is a powerful claim.
