“Interruption of the Ceremony” I chose a cartoon “Interrupting the Ceremony” by John T. McCutcheon. This cartoon was created when United States was involved in the World War I. Specifically it was created in 1920 when the war was resolved and President Woodrow Wilson came up with a peace treaty called “14 Points”. This cartoon was specifically intended for the everyday people of United States including all races, because it shows everyone that United States did not want to get involved in foreign affairs and possibly explaining to people why America chose to stay away from Europe’s entanglements. Because Germany sunken a civilian British ship “Lusitania” with American people on it. Following that, United States had no choice but to enter the war.
When the war ended, American president Woodrow Wilson came up with a peace treaty called the “14 Points”. This peace treaty was supposed to prevent any kinds of future wars by creating “The League of Nations”. This treaty was also supposed to punish those responsible for the war.
The ironic part of this cartoon is that Woodrow Wilson and United States were the ones creating the “14 points” and “the League of Nations”, but they did not want to take any part in it. United States wanted to stay away from any kind of foreign entanglements. The United States senate was critically against joining “The League of Nations” fearing that it would mean that United States will be involved in future conflicts of Europe. Another ionic part is that the “14 Points” were supposed to prevent future wars, but they one of the causes that started the World War II.
