John Wooden was a coach for the UCLA basketball team, his teachings to the players were very controversial to the fans because of his focus on the process and improvement of the team members. Wooden is a renowned basketball coach due to the rare advice he would give the players; this allowed him to keep his players focused and disciplined through the season. He would mainly work on the players ability to be unparalleled to their opponents because he pushed them to be in the best condition possible. In Wooden’s career he had precise language while giving speeches, devotion to the method of coaching, and pushing the players to play at their best ability at all times. Despite all the negative comments about his coaching skills and techniques, Wooden continued to use them because he knew it would work if they were consistent. Many knew he was very determined to this team and their efficiency because he “was devoted to that style of play throughout his coaching career, but he understood from the start that it would only work if his players were in top condition” (Passage 3). Wooden knew that his players had to be committed to the team mentally and physically to endure the training. Just as Wooden, in The Giver, the Elders knew that they would need to be disciplined in the way they ran society because they believed they knew best for all. The Elders would blind the people of the utopia so that they are unable to see what is the truth behind their utopia, they had to stay consistent with what they would say and how they would act and enforce the same onto the citizens. The Elders knew that if they were in charge and consistent, then they would be able to guide the citizens in a certain way as well.
