He was raised in Corvallis, Oregon, from the age of two. His father introduced Jon to mountaineering at the age of eight. From there on Krakauer always felt a strong connection with nature's beautiful face. Krakauer went on to study at Hampshire College in Massachusetts after high school at Corvallis. Jon ended up graduating with a degree in Environmental Science not surprisingly. After college, Krakauer climbed Devils Thumb, an experience he described in Eiger Dreams and in Into the Wild. He wanted to hike in from the coast on the Stikine ice cap and then climb the mountain on a route never attempted by any other climber.(IML.EDU) After three-weeks however, Krakauer finally conquered the mountain with determination. Krakauer kept up with his climbing all the way until 1996 when tragedy struck at Mount Everest. After defeating the peak, four of his teammates perished while making their descent down the mountain in the middle of a storm. These experiences gave Krakauer the inspiration to write on behalf of nature and how it affects us no matter on who we are as a person or what we have accomplished. (Wikipedia
