Jonas Salk was an American physician who created the first safe and effective vaccine for polio. Jonas Salk was a scientist and doctor who studied the virus of polio for most of his life. When Salk’s vaccine for polio was approved in 1955 he was considered a national hero. I believe that Jonas Salk belongs in America’s Hall of Fame because without the creation of this vaccine thousands of people would have died from polio. Jonas Salk was born on October 28, 1914 in New York, New York. He was the oldest of three. He was the son of Daniel and Dora Salk. He grew up poor in New York where his father worked in the garment district. As Jonas grew up his parents encouraged him to focus on his studies. After Salk graduated from high school he went on to earn his bachelor's degree in science at the City College of New York. By 1951, Jonas discovered that there are three different types of polio. His goal was to create a “killed” virus in which he would treat patients with the disease. In 1952, testing for the vaccine began. National testing began which made this the largest clinical trial in medical history. The vaccine was administered to roughly 1.8 million children that were infected with polio. Salk also administered the vaccine to his wife and two sons as a precaution. Salk’s research and implication of the drug was funded and supported by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Salk’s vaccine was almost replaced by an oral drug created by Albert Sabin. Albert created this vaccine with the “live” virus and the price of his was significantly lower than the price of Jonas Salk’s vaccine. Unfortunately, this vaccine created by Albert Sabin started to infect people and this made Jonas Salk’s vaccine the only one that was safe and
