Often in Smith’s speech she manifests simple anaphoras on the sentence level to portray her personal opinion. The three different anaphoras Smith establishes to shed light on her dispositions, are “I think that it is high time,”, “I am not proud,” and “I condemn”. Each of these sets Smith up to display her discontent with the Senate and how she hopes for a more dignified regime in the future. Smith’s anaphora in the beginning of her speech, “I think that it is high time,” implements exaggeration of her vexation towards the issues within the Senate that have been present for far too long. When she places the “high” in front of “time” it forms a new meaning to her repetition.
On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, a Virginia Lawyer, used rhetorical devices in his speech “Give me Liberty or give me Death!”. The rhetorical devices created an emotional and powerful speech. It motivates the Virginia house members to raise a militia to fight against the British army. Patrick Henry's speech to the Virginia Convention was to persuade colonial ideas against negotiating with England, he believed that the colonists should pull away from the British ruling and create their own country.
Rhetorical strategies are potent tools speakers use to convey their messages to their audience. In "12 Angry Men" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," the characters use rhetorical strategies to persuade their audience. One character that stands out for using a particular rhetorical strategy in both movies is Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is a prominent character in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "12 Angry Men."
Swift makes extensive use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos within the first eight paragraphs to create a strong initial argument that captures the audience’s attention and provide assurance that the information presented is viable. Swift starts with an appeal to Pathos by describing the state of Ireland: “the Streets, the Roads, and Cabin-Doors, crowded with Beggars of the female Sex, followed by three, four, or six Children, all in Rags, and importuning every Passenger for an Alms” (Swift, 1). The description of Ireland leaves a gloomy effect on the audience, as they are met with a somber tone set forth by a description on how thousands of people are affected by the poverty in Ireland. Swift continues this appeal to Pathos by describing the state of families within this poverty: “this prodigious number of Children, in the Arms, or on the Backs, or at the heels of their Mothers, and frequently of their Fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the Kingdom, a very great additional grievance” (Swift, 2). This description of the melancholy state of Ireland creates an emotional appeal because, the thought of having mass amounts of children being forced to cling to their Mothers and Fathers in a desperate struggle for survival, is a morose image.
Mothers have pushed their children to achieve greatness since the beginning of time. Such an example can be seen in a mother’s request to Samuel Johnson for an archbishop’s patronage for her son and the response of Samuel Johnson. In this letter, Samuel Johnson uses various rhetorical strategies to explain and justify to the mother that there is no reason for him to endorse her son and talk to the archbishop about patronage. In the beginning, Johnson explains the mistake that the mother made.
