In the book, Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account, by Dr. Miklos Nyiszli he tells us his story of his time in Auschwitz. In May of 1944 the author, a Hungarian Jewish physician, was deported with his wife and daughter by cattle car to the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. Dr. Nyiszli is a Jewish survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp which is located in Poland. Dr. Nyiszli eventually got separated from his wife and daughter, and volunteered to work under the supervision of Josef Mengele, the head doctor in the concentration camp. It was under his supervision that Dr. Nyiszli witnessed many innocent people die.
Thousands of Jewish prisoners were killed per day in concentration camps. The way the Nazis succeeded in killing this much Jews was by creating gas chambers and crematoriums. First, in the novel night, Elie Wiesel described how he witnessed dozens of “children being thrown into the flames.” Wiesel was told when he arrived to Auschwitz that “Here, you must work. If you don’t you will go straight to the chimney.
Elie Wiesel was one of the many unfortunate souls who were sent to Auschwitz, a well known concentration camp. He spent many painful years watching people get shot, or die of starvation; seeing people get sent to gas chambers for no reason. After he escaped, he turned bitter, and cruel. He later wrote the book Night. Elie Wiesel stated boldly, “The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference.”
Dehumanization during the Holocaust was the most condemnable factor as to how such cruel and inhumane acts could be brushed off as mere orders, brothers and sisters became feral towards one another, and how one’s body can become so isolated from the mind. It is difficult to imagine such horrid ideas as reality, much less as history, but Elie Wiesel describes all of these gruesome acts in Night, his autobiographical account of his experience during the Holocaust. The genocide of six million human beings is far from rational, and it seems like only monsters could be capable of such an act. In March of 1944 the Mozes family was relocated and sent to a ghetto in Simleul Silvanei and than deported to Auschwitz.
