Eddie Vedder’s song, “Society,” and it’s lyrics have a very noticeable resemblance to Chris’ ideals and journey relating in many different ways. Specifically, Chris’ ideals about society are very repetitive in the song and match the same concepts he carried throughout his life and journey. Vedder sings, “Society, crazy and deep. I hope you’re not lonely without me,” aligning with the same thoughts Chris had as he would soon leave this society. The stanza shows and agrees with Chris’ thoughts about society being crazy, resulting in his decision that he will soon leave society with his trip to the wilderness of Alaska alone. Vedder sings, “Society have mercy on me. I hope you’re not angry if I disagree.” This stanza also goes with Chris and his journey as he hopes his loved ones and society in general will forgive him for leaving, and hopes that because he disagrees with society, his loved ones and society, altogether, won’t be angry at him nor his journey. In the book and his journey, Chris portrayed himself to be a rebel against society as he didn’t agree with anything and specifically the government and their rules. For example in the beginning of the book, Chris says, “How I feed myself is none of the government’s business.
