Vicki Schultz uses the case of EEOC v. Sears Roebuck & Co. as an example of sex segregation of women in the workplace. In this court case it was found that the employer had not discriminated against women in commission jobs because the EEOC claims “were based on the faulty assumption that female sales applicants were as ‘interested’ as male applicants in commissions sales jobs. ”(174) Therefor Schultz suggests “lack of interest” in those commission sales jobs “rests on conventional images of women as ‘feminine’ and nurturing, unsuited for the vicious competition in the male dominated world of.”(174). She then goes on to describe that the “lack of interest” claim can be use in two ways; Conservative and liberal.
Women, following this ruling, would continue to be placed in lower jobs than men on the basis that they were not interested in it and had different values than men. This argument was accepted without any disagreement, continuing the long held stereotypes of women. Stereotypes of women were used as a justification for not allowing women to be placed in jobs that are normally dominated by men. These personal characteristics also seemed to be expected for all women. All women were perceived to fall under the umbrella of not wanting to take jobs that involved competitiveness, risky salary, and deterred from the normal working hours.
I held the role of Industrial Engineer for a large packing house and saw this statistic firsthand. In my organization, I was one of 8 engineers, the only female. Annotated Bibliography Gender equality in the workforce is a subject that has been researched throughout the years. Following the Civil Rights Movement in 1964 when sexual discrimination was outlawed, and in 1967 when President Johnson amended the bill in 1967. Researchers believe that discrimination is a thing of the past. Although, in 2012 Walmart faced nationwide lawsuits for discrimination (Hines, 2012).
The reading “Gendering Organizational Theory” written by Joan Acker analyzes the importance of implementing gendered organizations into the organization of public administration that integrate the role of women with neutrality. The author advocates for the usage of gender structures that advocates for gender-neutral character, job evaluation and the concept of abstract worker into the structure of complex organizations. Acker argued, “Jobs and hierarchies are represented as gender neutral, and every time such a job evaluation system is used, the notion of gender-neutral structure and the behavior based on that notion are re-created within the organization” (p. 425). The reading begins its discussion by mentioning the differences in treatment, society roles, and limitations and women face in their daily lives.
Gender Roles: Interpreting The Opposite Sex In today’s society men and women are often expected to perform different tasks, and occupy different roles based on their sex. Within different cultures, the view of how women and men should act and interact varies with political and religious influences, as well as personal influences. Geoffrey Chaucer suggests that people’s ability to understand the opposite sex is divided because of the stereotypes set in society for the opposite genders. Women are more likely to work as secretaries, and men are likely expected to work as managers and executives in the working field.
INTRODUCTION. Sexism towards women in the workplace also known as occupational sexism is one of the oldest form of discrimination against women.
