A story Enrique 's Journey written by Sonia Nazario is a book about a boy on his Journey to the united states. On Enrique’s Journey, he comes to a point where he has to make a tough decision between staying in the united states and going back to Honduras. Enriques dilemma is that he has just as many reasons to go back to Honduras as he does to stay in the united states. One example of Enrique wanting to stay in the United States seen when Enrique finally sees his mother “ He Jumps squarely onto the bed next to her he gives her a hug then a kiss“ (Nazario 190). The overall theme of Abuela Invents the Zero by Judith Ortiz Cofer is to always treat others with respect. If you don’t show respect towards others, you won’t have respect for yourself. In the story, Connie is very disrespectful towards her grandmother. In the text it states, “I try to walk far behind them in public so that no one will think we’re together,” (Cofer 4). This quote shows how Connie is embarrassed to be seen with her grandmother, and has little respect for her grandmother’s feelings.
In the story “Your Question For Author Here” by Kate DiCamillo and Jon Sciezka, Joe Jones is forced to write a letter to the author of his choice and ask questions about their writing. But he doesn’t care about the project he ends up being very rude and demanding which sparks the conflict between Maureen O’Toople and him. This conflict is a person vs. person which leads to conflicts between these two people. In the beginning of the story, Joe Jones sends a very rude letter to the author of his choice for a literacy project. When she tells him that she will not answer his questions because he is being very rude he becomes bossy and tells her what to do.
In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s short story, American History, she describes the effects of prejudice towards her, being Chicano adolescent, as she is bullied and disrespected at school and refused rights because of her background. At a young age, she felt humiliated by everything she did and “hated the city” she lived in and “Public School 13” as well as her “skinny flat-chested body”(127) and much more. She was tormented and made fun of at school for being different and for being skinnier than most of the other girls. As a result of this tormenting by her peers she had almost no self esteem and a very negative outlook on life. impacted her self esteem and outlook on life.

Memories can sometimes be unreliable, but can also be all that someone can base their life off of. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s memoir Silent Dancing: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican childhood uses storytelling to share her memories in a life lesson manner.

Gloria Anzaldúa’s “La Prieta” tell her struggles with identity by talking about prejudices she dealt with while growing up. These prejudices, such as colorism, sexism, and heteronormativity, were not only held by people outside her social groups but within them as well. Anzaldúa goes on to explain the way identity is formed by intersecting factors and not only one aspect of someone’s life therefore denying one factor of identity can cause isolation and self-hatred. The fact that Anzaldúa developed faster than is deemed normal the first struggle in forming her identity.
Overall, this story shows that even if you have money and success you may not necessarily have everything you need to have your American dream because everyone needs human interaction and love to be happy. “ An Hour with Abuelo” by Judith Ortiz Cofer illustrates the theme that the world does not revolve around you. In the beginning of the story Arturo was forced to visit Abuelo and was trying to get out of the place as soon as possible. For example the text states that “ I hate the place, the old people’s home, especially the way it smells like industrial-strength ammonia and other stuff I won’t mention. ”(Ortiz Cofer 59). At the later stages of the story Abuelo politely excuses Arturo because of the pink runner lady which completely changed the roles in the story.
