Julia was an English-born American prostitute and also a madam in Virginia City, Nevada. She was born in 1832 in London, England. She was described as a beautiful and educated woman, she was also an independent prostitute. Julia died on the 19/20 of January in 1867, she was murdered by strangulation and bludgeoning, and also she was murdered at her house. In 1859 Julia was the first white American woman who was unmarried to go in the mining boomtown.
Although being First Lady came a lot of limelight and responsibility, Julia Grant found a way to love it no matter what. She is known for constantly saying that her eight years in the White House were the best years of her life. Her lifestyle, clothing, and appearance were constantly reported in the media. She brought the happiness and joy back into the White House after years of gloom from the Civil War(Presidential Power). No matter who someone's hero is one thing stays the same. A hero is someone that has strived to help out of their own will. Anyone could be a hero. However not everyone is a hero. Being a hero takes courage.

Antigone is a young woman in the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone is considered a hero by many for giving up her life for her brother and going against the law in 44 B.C. While Terry Malloy is considered a hero in the movie On the Waterfront for also going against rules. Malloy would be considered a rough kid who got into a bad situation with a group of mugs while working on the dock, not only does he save the day for himself but for others that are working on the docks as well. Antigone and Terry both go against rules for what they believe is right and become heroes.

She doesn't care that theres a chance of her getting caught she does the right thing and helps.

Many will agree Miep Gies fits this description; an article written about her gives her the title “Hero of the Holocaust” (Legacy.com). She’s a hero because she protected some of the people targeted by the Nazis, preserved the diary of a girl known all over the world, and continued to spread hope and encouragement for the rest of her life.

Rosa Parks was a person who helped those in need and did something to make the world a better place. Rosa Parks is a hero because she stood up for herself, she stood up for others, and made the world a more peaceful place.
The best examples of heroes may come from fictional stories but real life heroic traits often come from those fictional heroes. Some of these traits seem godlike but there are humans that hold heroic traits beyond what we can read about. Beowulf is a fictional character with superhuman strength that is fighting to save a group of people from multiple atrocious creatures. Harriet Tubman, on the other hand, is an African American slave who escaped from her master and ran an underground railroad to bring slaves to freedom. Although Beowulf is a fictional character and Harriet Tubman is not, they are both perceived as heroes that shared selflessness and leadership skills they used to accomplish their ultimate goals; saving peoples lives.
What makes a hero? A hero is someone who is willing to take a chance on something. Someone who can be strong and courageous to accomplish something. Someone who can complete a task and change a whole country. That is a hero.
Jane Addams was born September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. She was the eighth of nine children, and her father was a rich industrialist. In her lifetime she was a pioneer and social worker in America, and received her Bachelor's degree from Rockford College for women. Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
A true hero is a person that takes other people’s lives over their own and saves those lives in the risk of their own. Harriet is all over that definition. She saved over 300 people and not one person that she took with her was caught or killed. Harriet was an abolitionist, who lead the movement to end slavery. Many people declined that statement, but it is true.
Doing a brave task, being a doctor, being a rich person, or even having a certain name does not make you a hero. It is very hard to describe a hero but a simple description of a true hero is a person that is being true to himself, does things that has to be done no matter what the circumstances are, never afraid to do what is right, and gives the best sincerely. In my point of view, true heroes exist in our world, and they are needed to protect us from the society we are living in and ourselves. Many people regularly ask why we need heroes. Simply the answer is that heroes give us hope, solve problems, and pick us up when we are down.
My Definition of a Hero A hero is “Any person admired for qualities or achievements and regarded as an ideal or model” (“Hero”). When someone hears the word ‘hero’, they most likely think of firefighters, police officers, or soldier. However, the person who comes to my mind when I think of a hero is my mother, Becky Harper. She goes above and beyond each day, displaying characteristics of a hero.
