Throughout history, people have sought power and control. In the play Julius Caesar, Caesar is often portrayed as a power-hungry dictator who led the Roman Republic to its downfall. However, this portrayal is unfair and overlooks the many qualities that made Caesar a great leader. Caesar was a skilled military strategist, charismatic speaker, and a visionary person who brought what was needed to form Rome. His drive for power was not motivated by selfish ambition but by a desire to stabilize and strengthen the Roman Republic. Caesar uses his charm, strategic thinking, and military strength to get what he wants. By looking at his actions and motivations, we can learn about his effects of power on individuals and society in his climb to power. One way Caesar gained power was through his understanding of human nature. Julius Caesar was sharp with a lot of things and had a good understanding of human nature, which is how he charmed people, was a skilled politician, and military leader. It doesn’t matter at all what he tells the people to do, the people will do anything he asks, like it is said by Antony, “When Caesar says “Do this,” it is perform’d” (JULIUS CAESAR, Act 1, Scene 2 (1.2.13). Julius Caesar was also very committed to his people and had unwavering leadership. In Act III, scene I, Caesar states to his wife, “I am constant as the northern star,” which is a powerful line that shows his confidence and determination when it comes to leading.
