In many works of literature, a character often seeks what they see as justice no matter how they achieve it. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet conveys this idea when Hamlet attempts to avenge his father’s murder done by his own uncle, Claudius. To complete this task though, Hamlet struggles to listen to his own morals and ultimately knocks himself of the path of completing the vengeance. This sets up a great theme of retribution can spoil one’s morals. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet feels down and glum about his father’s mysterious death, and also angered about his mother’s quick remarriage to Claudius.
