Lizbeth Fierro June 29, 2024 Just Mercy Journal 3 In the book Just Mercy covers the devastating and regularly misunderstood experiences of young individuals who have been given life sentences without a chance of bail in Chapters 8 through 11. These chapters provide a thorough review of the American system of justice, with special attention to how it handles those who are understated. The difficult truth of a system that places punishment above rehabilitation and often indifferences juvenile offenders' ability to grow and change is what mainly stands out in these parts. A disturbing example of this inequality is the case of Ian Manuel, who was sentenced to life in prison without a chance of bail for a crime he committed when he was only thirteen
His writing is so descriptive, I felt as though I was there witnessing the occurring events. I was sadden by the emotional pain he endured at such a young age, and at the same instance I also felt angry because the thought of children in today’s society who are living with this sort of torment everyday by not having a family to be there for them. My oldest son has grown up with a family who is there for him not matter what happens, we never turn our back on what is ours, for the best or for the worse we are a family. He will soon turn twenty-seven and has been in and out of Juvenile Hall, County Jail, and State Prison since the age of thirteen. He just recently took a deal for a three year prison term.
The article “Life Sentences”, Christopher Shea describes various statements which I strongly agree with and have a strong position towards, such as the difficulties ex-convicts go through in attempting to find a living for themselves after prison and the amount of money America invests in prison. After almost 60 years, it seems as if our world has not progressed or learned anything from the Civil Rights movement, till this day African Americans are treated with no respect and are constantly being put down. Shea portrays in the article the hardships prisoners go through when reentering society in trying to find a job but, especially male African American implying how our world is still racist towards “different skin colors”. Alonza desires help to negotiate the complexities of his situation and forge a path for reconciliation and societal reintegration. I do agree with the sentence imposed on Jerry Sandusky, just like I believe most people who followed this trial did. He will most likely end up not making it out of prison, the judge made this decision for many reasons. Sentencing is one of the most difficult jobs of the judge, seeing as the a judge cannot just give out any sentence he must abide by guidelines and stipulations (Bohm & Haley, 2014). During this trial Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to more than 30 years but not more than 60 (UPI Newstrack, 2012). This sentencing was efficient for a multitude of reasons, even though he could have been given more time, and it is explained by the judge that he could have done so.
However, we are more than the labels used against us, because there are so much more to a person’s character. We should seek out the goodness in someone’s heart rather than the blemishes. Bryan Stevenson describes that private prisons “… has corrupted incentives
The criminal case I have selected for this assignment is on Justin Morton; who at the age of fourteen years old Morton was the first youth convicted of first-degree murder section 231 CC. Although, The report show that the young man was raised in a healthy and supportive home with his mother and father. In spite of this, Justin expresses to his psychiatrist his impulse and desire for inflicting pain on others; he claims to have no remorse for the murder of Eric Levrack. Not to mention, He also voiced to former classmates that "Eric was annoying, always invading his space. "As a matter of fact, after the killing on April 1, 2003, Morton had turned himself in, he described the event as an open game of trust just before he strangled Eric with a belt.
Andre Lee Thomas came from a very modest upbringing with 5 brothers and absent parents. He started displaying signs of mental instability at a young age which progressively worsened as he aged making several suicide attempts. Thomas received multiple detention warrants, many times after hurting himself or in one case, stabbing his own brother. In each of these instances the warrants were not enforced (“Trouble in Mind”). A day after his last detention warrant, Thomas stabs and then removes the hearts of his ex-wife, his son, and his ex-wife’s baby from a new boyfriend.
Moore exhibits how, “… few lives hinge on any single moment or decision or circumstance,” and that there was not defining difference between him and the incarcerated man who shares his name (182). The main difference between him and the other Wes Moore is the collection of family, culture, and experience that Moore had in his upbringing. His mother and grandparents, by providing structure and the opportunity to go to private and military school, “… made it clear that they cared if [he] succeeded, and eventually so did [he]” (115). His mother and grandparents, through their constant attempts to keep Moore looking beyond his seemingly hopeless future, created expectations for him that he would ultimately want for himself. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore never seemed to have any meaningful expectations that he could seek.
However, the sad reality is that in most cases is too late and an individual will not get treatment for a mental health diagnosis while in prison. In this case I feel that Leon is a victim of environmental, his mother’s mental health issues, social support, and finical poverty that caused him to become who he is today. Early interventions could by educators, and mental health professionals could have helped Leon at an eelier stage in his life.
With communities and the environment surrounding a person being a very important and impactful to the person’s life and future, it is no surprise that the author Wes Moore came out to be a very disciplined and successful man compared to the other Wes Moore who is now in prison, serving his life
The Brock Turner case is a very controversial case that spark debate on the subject of white male privilege and the abuse of power. People speculate that the only reason Turner received such a minimal sentence is because his parents are affluent and influential, due to their success and status as a white professional. He was found guilty and the judge gave him a very lenient sentence. Many people saw this as unfair to the girl that was raped and to everyone else impacted by this man 's crime. The judge 's name is Aaron Persky.
Justin’s story is very different from a normal child abuse case. Starting at a young age, Justin has definitely lived a life full of difficult obstacles to overcome Starting from birth, Justin 's mother was only 15 years old who abandoned him by giving him to her mother to care for. Even though Justin 's grandmother was concerned about his safety and wellbeing, the grandmother was obese and had several health issues and unable to take care of Justin for very long. Justin had a very painful life leading up to the events below.
“My father didn 't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it”. Every father wants their child to become better than themselves. A great father will make one’s life easier and worthful. Reputation falls after father 's whom determine one’s reputation. Homer uses literary devices such as patronymics, epithets, and similes in The Odyssey, to convey Greeks value their fathers and reputation.
