Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because it is not fair for juveniles to commit big crimes and get away with it so easily.

The purpose of the juvenile system is to focus on the reasons for their behavior rather than focusing on the being guilty or innocent, like how the adult court system works. Having community based restorative justice is one of the main targets the system should focus on with juveniles. Community based restorative justice focuses on the harm that was caused and what needs to happen in order to be better. I also believe that getting juveniles involved in community service will only do good for the kids as well. This type of rehabilitation may involve sending the juvenile to boot camp, after-school programs and incarceration. Besides locking up and disciplining the juvenile, rehabilitation also involves skill-building. Having juvenile rehabilitation to correct their tendencies is beneficial to the community since they won’t become a threat. For those who are deemed not dangerous should be rehabilitated instead of incapacitated. Instead of being placed in an adult facility, juveniles in detention centers have a better opportunity of getting rehabilitation to prevent future criminal acts.

The goal of youth sentences is to hold young people responsible by enforcing penalties that have real repercussions for them, encourage their rehabilitation, and help them reintegrate into society. The cost of creating and maintain juvenile detention centers is insane. During the 1990s “the juvenile justice system saw a 43% increase in spending, mainly as a response to the expenditures that accompanied the increased confinement of juvenile offenders” (Gaudio, 2010). It has been proven that juvenile’s brains are not as developed as adults and the threat of detention does not affect them as much as it would in an adult so it would not be as affective at deterring crime. Being incarcerated also may make a juvenile more likely to reoffend once they are released.

Anecdote Suddenly one Friday night, Javier started seeing a bunch of gangsters arriving to the party in which they were at too. Can you imagine waking up behind closed walls and bars? Waking up to see your inmate who is a 45-year-old bank robber and you are a 14-year-old minor who made a big mistake. This is why minors who have committed crimes should not be treated the same as adults. Some reasons are because the consequences given to minors in adult court would impact a minor’s life in a negative way. If a minor is tried through a juvenile court, they have a greater chance of rehabilitation.
