The Voice of a Generation
The Kanye West biography is filled with arrogant quotes and narcissistic stories, and although Kanye may not be the most modest man, he has every right to brag due to his immense amount of success. “Someone could be a better rapper, dance better, but culturally impacting? When you look back, who’s the icon at the end of the day” (West, 7). However, Kanye West has not always lived the superstar life. He started out as a young kid living with his mother in south Chicago, and with hard work and dedication, he became what everyone knows him as today; the Voice of a Generation.
Kanye was born Atlanta, Georgia, on June 8, 1977 to Donda Williams and Ray West who met each other at Spelman College. Although the marriage between Donda and Ray fell through, the bond between Kanye and his mother never did. When Kanye was about three years old, he and Donda moved to Chicago where she took a job as an English professor. As Kanye grew up, the public school system wasn’t challenging enough enough for him. His incredible artistic and musical skills showed signs of a young genius. His mother saw his potential and quickly transferred him to the Vanderpoel Magnet School. Kanye saved up enough money to buy a keyboard, a turntable, and a mixer, and from that point on, he never looked back. At a young age, he was already gaining attention and getting advice from big names in the music industry. The producer, No I.D., taught Kanye the art of sampling music, which he later used to adopt his own recognizable sound. As West continued to perfect his craft, his work started to pay off.
