Do you know Los Angeles’ new mayor of 2022? Karen Bass is the first woman and the second African American to serve as mayor of LA. She works extremely hard to ensure that every homeless person is off of the streets living and in homes. After serving as a nurse and a Physician Assistant, she founded the Community Coalition to organize Black and Latino residents against substance abuse, poverty, and crime. She then moved on to represent Los Angeles in the State Assembly and was elected by her peers to serve as Speaker. This made her the first African-American woman to lead a state legislative body.
