A1: Initial thoughts Initially, I though the author was talking of a real death that was being relayed to a wife whose husband had died. Reading through the first paragraphs of the story, I got the expression that the author was narrating of how a young lady was dealing with the news of losing a husband in an accident. I felt that the young woman was genuinely grieving after losing her husband but to the contrary, she seems happy about the death as the story goes on. At first, I believed that the husband, Brently Mallard, had died after Richard had even verified the news with a second telegram and visiting the newspaper office. After reading the story by Chopin (1894) I can clearly say that the author had well thought of the narrative. The reader is made to believe that the wife is genuinely crying and grieving while in the real sense she is in a celebratory mood and feels free. The author takes the reader through a series of grieving by the wife who has been left by her husband. Unexpectedly, the grieving widow is celebrating the news of her husband’s demise as it sets her free (Chopin, 2017). At the beginning of the story, the two people who want to convey the news of the husband’s death are at pain to break the news fearing that the wife may collapse due to heart problems. However, the wife seems happy with her husband’s death and even starts to imagine how sweet life would be without the husband. The author catches the reader’s imagination through Mrs. Mallard by explaining how she will get her life back after the death of the husband in a humorous manner. However, the end of the story turn ironic, the author uses the aspect of surprise and shock.
