Marriage is an important part of everyone’s life. Marriage is the union of two souls. Two persons start their new life hoping that it is going to be prosperous and full of joyfulness. But soon this hope fades away as the husband completely tries to encircle and bound her wife according to his wishes. He tries to be dominant and is always looking for the opportunity to show his dominance over his wife to society, because he feels that he can rise in the eyes of society. Women is always oppressed and underestimated both by the society and her spouse. She is not given the freedom to explore her talents or express herself. As Mrs. Mallard is suffering from heart problem, her sister gives her the news of her husband’s death as gently as possible. Mrs. Mallard reacts to this news like any other woman would. She starts weeping in her sister’s arms by hearing this terrible news. She is in shock by hearing the sudden loss of her husband’s death. As she is upset she excuse herself and goes to her bedroom. She wants to sit alone for some time. She sits motionless on her armchair. “She sat her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who was cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams”(Chopin, 77). These expressions shows Mrs. Mallard’s upset condition. Her deep sadness. Mrs. Mallard is almost in unconscious condition. May be she is thinking something. But Chopin also describes, “She did not hear the news as many women would have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance” (Chopin,77). Through this the author mention the way that how the women reacts after hearing a horrible news. But Mrs. Mallard does not behave like other women after hearing the news of her husband’s death. Although the story is a fiction, but it describes a true state of a woman. There are many concerns related to feminism i.e. a woman’s own interests, her identity are illustrated in the story. She is also a god’s creature who wants to live her life according to her wish and the way she wants. Like everyone else she also needs freedom. She does not want to give the control of her life to any other person. Mrs. Mallard’s character clearly depicts a woman’s oppressed marriage life.
