In the novel The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins conveys the qualities of a hero through the character Katniss Everdeen. The novel is set in the dystopian nation of Panem, where one boy and girl from 12 different Districts must take part in The Hunger Games, a televised annual event in which the tributes of each District, are required to fight to the death until there is only one survivor. The protagonist Katniss everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister Prim’s place and subsequently evolves into a significant hero in the novel. This is conveyed through Katniss’s courage throughout the games. Katniss shows courage when she volunteers as tribute saving her sister Prim’s life. This is made evident to the reader when Katniss says “I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute.” The use of repetition emphasizes Katniss’s desire to save and protect her family. This is further seen in the moment when Katniss works up the courage to save Peeta’s life by getting the backpack which has the medicine for Peeta’s leg.
