Hope in the Hunger Games
Imagine you are running away from someone trying to kill you in a forest when there are 22 other people that are also trying to kill you just to win a game. This is Katniss Everdeen, the main character in The Hunger Games series. Katniss’s life changed around when her little sister, Prim Everdeen, was chosen for The Hunger Games where she will compete against people that are older than her in a fight to the death. Katniss has no choice but to volunteer instead of watching her sister die. Now Katniss has to compete in The Hunger Games and win to return to her family alive. Towards the first section of the book where the theme first appears When Katniss realizes that they are outdoing the other districts, she will get more sponsors, increasing their chances of survival. She finally finds hope and thinks that she has a chance at winning the hunger games and coming back to Prim, her mother, and Gale. The first piece of evidence is when Katniss gained hope for the first time after her dad died and her family was starving. “ I dropped my gaze, embarrassed, and that’s when I saw it. The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive.” (Collins 32). This is proven by this quote “I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-forth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!”(Collins 345). Katniss and Peeta won even after being from the “worst” district and being doubted by many people but they still ignored the doubters and they had hope that they would win and survive the hunger games. Even after they got taken away from their family and basically were kidnaped to play in a game where you have to kill other people, that was also taken away from their family, and be the last one alive. Another quote that proves this
