The lottery is something that millions of people play every year, and those people only have 1 in 175 million chance of winning. So the question is why do these people keep playing when they know they have such a slim chance of winning? It is because these people are living off the dreams that they might win millions for two measly dollars. Many of scholars have done research and conducted studies on why people keep playing the lottery. In these studies, scholars have found out that why we play the lottery is because of many different factors. The master of the lottery is Rebecca Paul Hargrove, who is the president at the Education State Lottery Corporation. She created the Georgia and Florida state lotteries. These lotteries she created became huge and Florida started outselling every other lottery in the nation. Hargrove has an understanding what makes people play the lottery. She says, “If you made a logical investment choice, you’d play a different game, it’s not an investment. It’s entertainment” (Piore 2014). One of the ways the lottery companies keep making you come back is the idea that you made money by doing nothing at all. Everyone gets sucked into the big jackpot lottery’s because will you are waiting to see if you are that lucky winner, you live one the dream on what you would spend all that money on. However, a lot of people wouldn’t play if they just had the big jackpot lottery’s because they would lose hope that they will win and stop playing it.
