Orcas in Captivity Orca care today has drastically worsened and is not suitable for the minimal care needed to provide for the orcas. Some may argue that keeping animals in captivity will improve their quality of life. However, animals that are reintroduced into habitats after being held in captivity fail to respond to the wilderness with optimal success. Allowing animals to survive, provide, and thrive in their natural habitat not only provides for their psychological needs, but it helps to keep the quality of the environment around them more desirable. Protecting animals in their natural habitat is a more rational plan that is prone to succeed than holding animals in a cesspool of captivity. Smaller zoos and captivity sites fail to achieve optimal care for the animal (“The Fate of”). Animals often suffer from physiological and physical abuse. Imagine being torn away from your mother as a nursing baby? Imagine trying to find friends in a new environment. Imagine it is even more difficult to adjust when the new people speak a different language. Rules regarding aggression exist in all cultures, including that of the orca whale. Captive orcas tend to become more aggressive towards other orcas and humans: “four people have been killed and dozens more injured by captive orcas” (“Captivity is Dangerous”). Keeping such large creatures in a confined space with little to no real exercise for their minds or their bodies creates psychological problems that are exhibited as aggression towards their captors as well as other orcas. In the wild, orcas are able to remove themselves from volatile situations (“Captivity is Dangerous”), but not in captivity.
