Keeping The Drinking Age Essay

In these past few years more and more people are leaning towards lowering the drinking age, yet there are still many that disagree and want the age of twenty one to remain the legal age to consume alcohol. In 1984 the United States Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act that changed the drinking age from eighteen to twenty one. Many of the states did not agree with this act and planned on keeping their legal drinking age at 18, until congress passed the Federal Aid Highway act, which states that if the drinking age in that state was under twenty one, they would lose almost 10 percent of their funding for highway public transportation. Throughout the United States thousands of citizens consume alcohol. Even if the legal drinking age is 21, minors will still consume it illegally. I would like to suggest that the legal drinking age be lowered back down to 18 because it would let under aged Americans to drink alcohol in a much safer environment. The United States Government changed the drinking age to twenty one in 1984 for a reason. If it was lowered back to eighteen it would not be safe to let minors drink. There would be a greater chance of alcohol related deaths. Underage citizens are also not mature enough to drink alcohol and handle the responsibility that comes with drinking. This is not a bad argument seeing as there are some studies that show that minors are not able to handle the responsibility of consuming alcohol and these studies also show that they are more likely to abuse alcohol. This can be very true and many minors do fall into the category that these adults are talking about, the minors that drink for one reason, to get drunk. While many underage drinkers fall into this category, it is still very unfair to the other, more mature eighteen year olds who know how to be responsible and will not abuse
