Every artist is different and that goes for the art too. Any piece of art looks different with the shape, style, color, or even smell sometimes. On a canvas, it could have similar brushstrokes and completely different. Also, the reason why they started to paint, either to make money, to gain status, or just for fun. Just like there is differences between artists Henrietta Johnson and John Smibert.
When choosing a portrait to analyze, some may have a very difficult time doing so due to the abundance created over the years. For my analysis, I chose the portrait called Washington, General Lafayette and Tilghman at Yorktown. This painting, done by Charles Willson Peale depicts the three generals after their victory at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War. As a response to the victory, the Maryland House of Delegates asked Governor Thomas Sim Lee to commission Charles Willson Peale to paint the portrait- which he finished in 1781.
Jacques-Louis David’s painting of Napoleon Crossing the Alps is a great example of glorifying war. Within the painting, it portrays Napoleon riding a horse pointing in the direction at which he intends on leading his men into battle. The overall image exemplifies a focus on being very strong, masculine, and superior. Napoleon’s superiority is shown through his clothing, and the horse standing up and being white.
It will also contain what the meaning of these two images is. For example, in the first image “9/11/2001” the artists drew the twin tower and colored it in black. They also made the background a different shade of black so it might look like they twin towers and the background blend. Why would the artists decide to color the background black and the twin towers black as well?
Throughout this semester as a class we have gone over many different terminology, seen many artists from all different countries and time periods. We have also learned about different kinds of art and media that the Artist work with. Over the entire semester I have gained a greater appreciation and understanding for art. Taking all of the new information that I learned this semester I choose three pieces of artwork from the St. Louis Art Museum. Two are similar to each other and the other is very different.
The whole painting is in black and white which gives it a lugubrious tone. The angle of the portrait allows the audience to see the facial expression of each person in the painting. Both African American males have a sort of grin on their face, which shows that the painting is in favor of them. The communist, KKK member is depicted as a skeleton that is weak and being destroyed. The man that is stopping the communist member from hanging the little boy has a banner on that says CRC, which is a representation of the civil rights congress standing up for the rights of African Americans during that time.
Bridget Mullen is an amazing and innovative artist. She did an artist talk at the University of North Georgia (UNG) on August 27th at 2pm. The presentation of her art was held at the Gainesville Campus Art Gallery in the Performing Arts building. Recently I also saw Hsiu-Ching Yu at the University of North Georgia at the Gainesville Campus. She was there doing an Art Talk on October 1, 2015 and she had an art gallery set up as well.
The image seems as though the British were firing the Americans with no mercy, as if they were in a war. It looked as they were killing almost everyone. There is cloud of smoke coming from riffle everywhere. People look more violent from British side and American side seems to be the unfortunate victims. The extra drama and color to the painting is created to give nan illusion to a cruel system.
In the series of prints, Los Caprichos, there lies a dark, ominous visage of humanity, one in which we see the artist 's future work following the same style. The Sleep of Reason (fig 1). A human sleeps, quite peacefully, as if unintentionally oblivious to the bats and owls and lynx that lay in wait, ready to strike with wide eyes. A singular creature stands out from the rest, as it is staring at the viewer, rather than focusing on the sleeping figure. This forces us to meld with the world presented in the piece, to become an active participant in the world.

The painting depicts what seems to be a panoramic view from afar but looking closely each aperture and objects make up the impressions of faces. From the left side there seems to be an aperture looking over a big cliff with branches of trees. This cliff and branches make up the face of an old person. The rock exposures within the cliff form the illusions of wrinkles, wrinkly lips and a long and untreated mustache. The branches give the effect of baldness, contributing to the overall appearance of an old man’s face.
The second image is Portrait of the Kangxi Emperor in Court Dress. This piece if art was created by Qing Dynasty during the 18th century dating the 1644- 1911. In addition, this image was concealed only to be seen by the elite and royalty. During favorable occasions painting like this was created. The Emperor was mysterious and only seen by a few which increased his God-like status.
Thomas Cole’s The Voyage of Life: Manhood, embodies the stress and hardship associated with maturation, and the confusion and turmoil that one faces when transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. Painted in 1842, during the peak of Romanticism, the image depicts a fearful man, the Everyman, sailing down a roaring river surrounded by a gnarled tree and jagged rocks in a golden boat. A cliff hangs over the river, and the sky above is dark with only a small glimpse of light in the horizon. In the top left corner, the image of an angel penetrates the threatening clouds and watches over the man, though he does not notice her.
