There are several factors that contributed to the beginning of the American Civil War. Arguably, slavery is the biggest reason for the Civil War, with several reasons connected to it. While slavery is the primary cause, there are several secondary causes including free labor ideology, the Compromise of 1850, the Missouri Compromise, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Pottawatomie Massacre, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown’s raid, and the succession of the Southern states. To begin, slavery is the overarching cause of the American Civil War. All of the events above are due to it.
Document 2 illustrate the graph of the population, soldiers, number of factories, and the miles of railroad tracks. The population, number of soldiers, number of factories, and miles of railroad tracks was greater in the North than the South. The South was angry and intimidated of the North. In conclusion, the Civil War originated from numerous reasons such as the North abolishing slavery, South seceded from the Union, and the powers of the North .The South was furious of the North.
In the documentary “The Civil War” by Ken burns episode one “The Cause,” the main reason that sparked the American Civil War was slavery. Slavery was a huge part of the Southern economy. When the cotton gin was created, the production of cotton increased and this also caused the demand for slaves to increase. The South was dependent on slave labor to keep their economy running. Slaves worked hard in plantations for hours and some slaves would even work for more than fourteen hours.
States rights was the largest single factor that caused the civil war, not slavery. The Confederate States of America wanted the states to decide most laws for themselves, not the federal government. If the states decided most laws, it would keep the federal government small, which is partly what the CSA wanted. The states deciding most laws would also keep the power in the country in check by not allowing politicians in Washington to gain much power.
There are many factors that led up to the American Civil War. One of the main causes was the conflict that arose from the North and South’s opposing views of slavery. In Abraham Lincoln’s “A House Divided” speech he said, “In my opinion, [slavery] will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed. ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand’” (A House Divided 511).
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
After the efforts to gain independence from Britain and the creation of the United States of America, eighty years later this union was not so united. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, it was the first time that Americans fought Americans. Among many reasons, the Civil War is known to be a result of the arguments over the delineation of the States’ Rights or the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. In actuality, the Civil War, the most deadly war in American history, was due to disputes over slavery in the American territories. Therefore, the Civil War was inevitable because of the consequences that occurred one being slavery.
The South seceded from the Union because of Abraham Lincoln being elected President, Harriet Beecher Stowe writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin, abolitionists were becoming more vocal, and the differences between the Northern and Southern economies being so diverse. One reason the South seceded from the Union was that Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Abraham Lincoln was part of the Republican Party, people who supported the abolitionist movement. The Southerners did not
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
Many to this day ponder what was the main cause of the civil war. Secession from the Union was the primary cause of the Civil War because the south felt their only option was to secede in order to preserve slavery, making them feel their only option to protect themselves was War. One of the main reasons why the South decided to secede and go to war, was to preserve slavery, as they were afraid that the Union would exempt it. As defined, a civil war needs 2 sides in order to even define it as that, both obviously disagreeing on a topic that they felt they needed to threaten their countries' unity for.
Therefore, slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. It wasn 't just the fact that slavery itself existed and some people were against it, but it was also that there had been so many disputes on whether or not slavery should
There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. (Mrs. Wise) "The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the North." Next, sectionalism. Sectionalism-
