On October 1, 2014, Kennesaw State University announced that it was going to be a tobacco free campus. In other words, all types of tobacco including cigarettes, vaporizers, hookah pens, and dip was prohibited on the campus. The reason behind the ban of tobacco on campus is because “Kennesaw State University is dedicated to maintaining a healthy working and learning environment for employees, students, and visitors” (Policy at KSU: Smoke/Tobacco-Free Policy). If that is the case then why is it allowed for other unhealthy items to be sold on the campus? There has been a big controversy over the ban on campus between smokers and non-smokers. Non-smokers are glad because they do not have to deal with the possibility of having second hand smoke anymore and the ones who do smoke feel like a right is being taken away from them. KSU had designated smoking areas which were out of the way, and had other paths that allowed students to walk around the smoking area with just a few extra steps. In a way the students that do smoke were already having their rights restricted. Smoking is a habit that many people have. When one wakes up in the morning they need a cigarette or when they are under stress a quick drag will soothe the nerves. People have habits such as drinking coffee as well.
