I conducted a telephone interview with Tammy Hubert the morning of Thursday, October 29, 2015. She works at a local Portland agency called, Central City Concern. The agency is a large company and has numerous services to offer the community. Tammy works in the CCC Recovery Center. Working at Central City Concern is a newer job position for her as she was just hired with the company in June of this year.
Throughout this weeks reading on Chapter 4, we focus in on the Progressive Era and the establishment of urban America. The industrial revolution was at its peak and the United States was developing rapidly. Immigration, manufacturing output, and urban development grew faster than any other time in the nation’s history. One of the most significant advances in technology in recent times has been the invention of the cell phone. Cell phones have become a massive part of the world that people live in today. The ability to communicate with anybody in any part of the world whenever possible has been a substantial improvement to the way individuals live. Technology has allowed people to connect in more ways than ever before, but it is currently disconnecting people from the world right in front of them. Paul Goldberger’s essay “Disconnected Urbanism” incorporates multiple persuasive methods to be successful in effectively convincing its audience that cell phones have taken people away from the places around them.
Introduction As the world’s population continues to migrate and live in urban areas, planners, engineers, and politicians have an important role to ensure that they are livable and sustainable. But what defines an urban area and what makes it so attractive? In my opinion, urban areas are places that consist of a variety of land uses and buildings, where services and amenities are easily accessible to the general public, and includes an established multimodal transportation network. Also, it should be a place where people can play, learn, work, and grow in a safe and collaborative manner.

Urbanization, or the growth of cities, erupted during the Industrial Revolution. Cities were a place of work, innovation, and technology. Over the course of fifty years (1850-1900) more and more people moved to the cities, which caused more and more problems in them. With these problems came solutions, and those solutions led to change. These changes could be good like movements to get cleaner water or having plumbing.
When people are talking on a cellular phone and walking around, they tend to lose the sense of what is going on around them, which leaves them blind to any potential threat because of carelessness, and they miss the offer that is given at that moment in time. In this article, “Disconnected Urbanism” by Paul Goldberger from the textbook on page 235, Goldberger discusses about people’s usage of cellular phones — today’s one of the most effective technology in the world that have changed people’s lives — talks about how the cellular phones are impacting people who living in a densely populated urban area, how people are now becoming disconnected from the world around them, and what are causing to their ability to perceive space. He talks about the seriousness of technology in the world to the readers with persuasive and pessimistic phrases from a subjective point of view. In his overall narration, he compares and contrasts between two different main objects to persuade the readers.
For our project we chose the category of photography, and based our photos based on the style of photographer Martin Roemers. Roemers traveled all around and was influenced greatly from his travels to major cities such as New York and Mumbai. While traveling to these major cities, he focused on people who live in densely populated areas and urban towns. He took photographs of the lifestyle that the people of these major cities endure on a daily basis, and compiled them into one of his acclaimed works known as Metropolis. His goal was to reveal the human condition, and the chaotic lifestyle that takes place.

The social problems that urbanization and industrialized in the late 19th century created was slums. “Forty-two men and women in a room not more than twelve feet square, and in the corner on a heap of dirty straw lay a woman with a newborn babe” (Related Document 1, pg. 275). Immigrants were living in an overcrowded tenement and having to pay high rent. They lack access to clean water for drinking, garbage and sewage system. Most of the people who live in the slums became the victim of crime and diseases.
Cities improve due to innovation, but humans residing in them may not. The Industrial Revolution was a period in time where new inventions helped labor become less taxing and more efficient in the South. On the other hand, the North developed urban cities, which attracted many people. Urban cities had become the epitome of civilization: ease of life and wealth was present, but not available to everyone. To elaborate, these urban cities provided job opportunities to women.
A shock city is the urban place that represents a massive and rapid changes in social, economic, and cultural life (urbanization) due to many factors, including new models of transportation such as railroads, industrialization, and other factors. The first city that was considered the “shock city” was actually Manchester, England. It grew very quickly, and it was the world’s first industrialized city and the home of the cotton industry, cottonopolis - a metropolis centered on cotton trading. Same as Manchester, Chicago was also the “shock city” of North America because of its rapid growth. Both cities were industrial cities, Chicago rose from a struggling village sunk in the middle of a grassland creek to a metropolis city.
Aftermath of the Invasion Finally, it is important to note that the invasion of Iraq has produced several challenging problems for Iraq, the region, the international community, and for neoconservatives themselves. In fact, the failure to find weapons of mass destruction, the lack of planning for the period after the military operations ended, as well as the violent opposition to the new regime were the primary results of the neoconservative misconceptions about Iraq (Plesch, 2005, p. 45). Additionally, in their War on Terror and the invasion of Iraq, the United States and its coalition did not achieve their objective of weakening terrorist groups. Living in a diverse world it’s distinction and similarities. The village is a small area with a small population. Life in the village is very basic and traditional while life in the city is full of luxury and modernity. Cities have a large population and it is often noisy and crowded. On the other hand, the lifestyles in villages and urban areas are totally different, but you can hardly find any similarities.
