Kindred by Octavia Butler “Kindred” is a fantasy novel by Octavia Butler, which has been tailored to explain extraordinary situations. Dana, a young black woman holds the power to travel back and forth in time and experience situations that could have been true. The majority of the characters she meets and lives with in the previous century are related to her as her ancestors. Although she finds it difficult to reflect upon each and every detail during her time with the, she finds that all the characters and personalities are mentioned in the records of her family. The story is about Dana witnessing the events where her family and ancestors underwent tortures and received unfair treatment from the White race. Some may find gender to be consequential in this society. Evidently, Rufus’s White family included him, his father (male), and his mother (female). Needless to say, Rufus’ father tortured and beat his Black slaves on various occasions not because of his gender but because of his authority. If gender were to play a major role, then Rufus’ mother would not have been able to inflict harm and torture the slaves because of her gender. More so, if gender was so important, then all the males both White and Black would have some sort of authority over all the females both White and Black. This means that Rufus’ father would not have been able to beat and sell off his Black male slave. He would have only been able to keep his female Black slave. This clearly indicates that gender had little influence in that era and that race had a much deeper psychological and physical
