I am reading Hill of Bones: The Medieval Murderers By Karen Maitland, Susanna Gregory, Bernard Knight, Philip Gooden, and Ian Morson, and I am on page 472 This book is a collection of shorter stories each leading into the next spanning from the time of king Arthur all the way to 2010. In this journal I will be evaluating. I will be focusing on the second story from the book, which takes place at Bath abbey in 1199 and evaluating the character Gwenllian.
When he is about to become king, it says, “...they kneeled at once, both rich and poor, and cried Arthur mercy because they had delayed him so long, and Arthur forgave them...” (Malory, Book I, Chapter VII) They tried to delay him being made king because they did not believe that he was the rightful king. But he forgave them. He was also a great leader, and a great warrior, too.
She was repulsed by him and afraid of him once she was faced with the truth of what he was. He had to come to terms with the fact that his wife wanted someone else because she didn’t believe he was “man” enough for her. Their love meant to her after discovering his secrets, so it couldn’t have been true love at all. She practically jumped at the chance to see the beast in him rather than the man. But, when it really mattered, his king saw the man in a beast.
King Arthur’s wife, Guinevere, was a strong woman, who cared for Arthur. In many books that tell of the tales of Arthur, they often show how important she was to him. There are many examples that describe how much the two loved and cared for each other. This is shown in the book King Arthur and His Knights when, “His love for Guinevere made him fight even more bravely than usual, and he soon won the battle. After he had returned to Camelot, he told his Knights that he wished to marry the princess.
Guinevere Guinevere, King Arthur’s wife, is not who he thinks she is. She can be described as secretive, shy, and also acts conservative. Lancelot, King Arthur’s knight, and Guinevere fell secretly in love and share something between them that is not supposed to happen. Guinevere is what people call now-a-days, a whore.

In his award-winning adaptation of Le Morte d’Arthur, which is titled The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, John Steinbeck colorfully depicts the adventures of the King Arthur and various knights who claim him as their leader. Together, they mend the rifts created in the kingdom by the death of Arthur’s father, King Uther, and shape the future of the realm. Equally as important and impactful as their male counterparts, however, are the many female characters who serve as their muses, guides, mothers, wives, lovers, daughters, friends, enemies, and bearers of doom. The portrayal of women in The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights demonstrates what various aspects of femininity represented to society at the time of the book’s writing.

Another example of people that are unable to perform a duty is the coward men that left Beowulf alone with the dragon. At the beginning of the story, Merlyn figured out that Guenever would be King Arthur’s wife since he knew what the future held. After Guenever and King Arthur met and fell in love, she also quickly fell in love with Sir Lancelot, one of King Arthur’s best friend. This love triangle was kept secret for a while, and Arthur did not even find out about it for a long time. The reader could often question why Guenever was such a kind woman, but kept her affairs going for so long. She always stayed calm, and kept peace.
While Aherns provides effective evidence for his argument, he seems to project modern views and thought onto the story and make assumptions of Tennyson’s purpose behind the text to fit him into a more progressive role. The details of the story do not typically read as particularly supportive of Guinevere’s rebellious actions or refusal to fit into the role society attempts to impose on her unless the story is being viewed from a modern perspective. Ahern asserts that “Her freedom of choice is limited by the world in which she finds herself, but she has no qualms about asserting her agency in the one arena in which she as a woman of noble stature can exert control –the arena of love” (Ahern 97). While this is true of Guinevere’s character, Ahern does not consider the way in which this aspect of her personality may have painted her in a negative light to many people as ultimately selfish and it focuses overmuch on how a modern audience may view her rebellion positively. There is also the matter of how Ahern argues for the condemnation of Arthur as the real one to blame beyond Guinevere.
