King George
King George born on June 4, 1738, in Norfolk, England. His father was Prince Frederick, Prince of Wales. His mother was the Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. He was born premature and not expected to live, so he was baptized the day he was born. His godparents were the King of Sweden, the Duke of Saxe-Gotha, and the Queen of Prussia (“George III of the United Kingdom”).
He was educated by private tutor. He could read and write in English and German and comment on political events by the age of eight. He resisted efforts to marry him off, but after George II died, he needed to secure the succession. He married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who he met on their wedding day, match made in heaven. He never took a mistress (which was very unusual for a British king), and they had a very happy marriage and 15 children. He needed a home for his nine boys and 6 girls and purchased Buckingham House, now the site for Buckingham Palace. Although peace was declared at the Treaty of Amiens, George thought it was just an experiment and not real. When Napoleon threatened to invade Britain, a massive volunteer movement to defend against the French began. King George reviewed 27,000 volunteers in Hyde Park. The people were convinced that George would lead them in to battle. His illness returned and the ministry regained power. The ministry tried to form a coalition with Sweden, Austria, and Russia. He tried to stop the ministry from passing a bill allowing Roman Catholics to become officers in the army, but he didn’t succeed (Timmons). After his youngest daughter died, George allowed his son to take over the regency and rule for him. He had cataracts, rheumatism, and developed dementia. He died at Windsor castle on January 29, 1820. His son Frederick, Duke of York was with him. Two of his sons, succeeded him, but didn’t not legitimate children. His last relative to hold the throne was Victoria, the last monarch of the house of Hanover (Timmons). George ruled for 59 years, the longest of any British ruler, until his granddaughter Victoria, and Elizabeth II. He was called Farmer George, first to make fun of his interest in science, but later to show him as a man of the people. Under his rule, The British agricultural revolution reached its peak leading the way for the Industrial Revolution. He built the largest telescope ever which led to the discovery of Uranus.
