King Hamlet, the past King of Denmark and beloved husband of Queen Gertrude and father of Prince Hamlet died this past week after being poisoned by his brother, Claudius. The King was the victim of jealousy between brothers. King Hamlet was sleeping in the garden, when Claudius approached him in his sleep, pouring poison in his ear. Claudius was jealous of his brother, having the throne and the beautiful Queen Gertrude. Claudius proceeded to take the crown, and the Queen, but King Hamlet got revenge in the end. King Hamlet’s greatest act came when he reappeared in Denmark as a ghost, and proclaimed to Hamlet “...Know this, noble youth: the serpent that stung your father’s life away now wears his crown!” (1.5.43-45). King Hamlet appears as a ghostly spirit, to tell the story of his murder to Hamlet. And because of this, Hamlet concocts a plan to kill Claudius to achieve revenge. Which he ultimately achieves in the end. He only wanted revenge on the person who murdered him, and not the Queen, as he now knows she was an adulterous beast. When Hamlet confronted his mother about marrying Claudius, the ghost appears and proclaims “Do not forget. The visitation is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose. But look, amazement on thy mother sits. Oh step between her and her fighting soul. Conceit in weakest bodies strongest works.” (3.4.122-126). King Hamlet did not want revenge on Gertrude for remarrying or having sex with Claudius while he was still alive, he wanted Hamlet to leave her be.
