The reason that Kino and Juana went searching for something of value was because Coyotito needed to be healed by the doctor. Once they found the “wonderful” pearl there was no longer a use for it. Juana’s seaweed cure had worked and now there was no need for the pearl. Kino only wanted to use it for things that weren’t necessary such as a wedding with Juana, with whom he was already married, and a rifle which he didn’t
This quote states that Kino won’t give up the pearl because he has become greedy. One of the reasons why Kino is a tragic hero is because he is greedy. “My son will go to school...we will be married... we will
Kino put his family second behind the pearl because he said “This pearl has become my soul,” said Kino. “If I give it up I shall lose my soul. Go thou also with God.” Juana knew that her relationship and her family is not as important as before. One example of this typical husband and wife relationship, is when the doctor finds out that Kino has the pearl and is being greedy.
When Kino heard about the pearl, it was called “the pearl that might be” meaning that the pearl could exist, but it is not one hundred percent positive that it actually existed. Kino knew that if he found that pearl that he could pay for his son to be healed. Stories from the natives proved it was a folktale, or just a legend. Juana even prayed for him to find the pearl. The next time that Kino went to search for pearls he found “the pearl that might be” in a large clam shell.
Everyone tries to become his friend and everyone wishes that they could have the pearl or at least some of the money. Nobody even cared about Coyotito in his condition and only cared about the money. People try to sell their items to shops to even be able to get on a similar level to Kino and his family money wise. The pearl has caused too much for their family to take. Juana says that they have to throw the pearl away or everyone in their community will hate them and they might even hate each other.
Kino wanted to sell the pearl so his son Coyotito could have a good life and education, he could own a gun, so he and Juana could have a real wedding, but soon after Kino’s love for his begins to change. ¨He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side¨ (Steinbeck 59). Even though Kino succeeded in finding the pearl, success did not follow. “Kino’s fist closed over the pearl and his emotions broke over him. He put back his head and howled.” After wanting this pearl more than anything, Kino was forced to face his failure of saving his son. This failure was unbearable for Kino, as he had tried as hard as he possibly could.
After halfheartedly pawing at a smaller one, eagerness overcomes him, and Juana softly urges him to open the prize catch. Expertly cutting into the edge of the shell Kino cuts the shell open to reveal the biggest pearl that they have ever seen. The sun of the gulf reflected off the perfect surface of the pearl. Her eyes nearly as wide as the pearl, Juana shrieks “Kino” shrilly,in astonishment to find that Coyotito’s wound has improved in the presence of the great pearl. Kino, overcome with emotion, tenses his entire body and lets out a resounding, guttural roar.
It is now he, not the sellers, who has the power to decide if he is going to sell the pearl or not. As Kino holds the pearl in his own bare hands, he has the courage to say that he is not selling the pearl. He is being cheated by the buyers, and is willing to not sell the pearl in the town, but to even risk his life by travelling to the capital for a higher price...which, would foreshadow Kino’s development of lack of honesty. Kino becomes savage he receives the pearls power. He begins to shows violence towards those he loves to save the pearl: “He stuck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side” (59).
At the start of the novella, Kino is a simple man and lives in a brush house along with his wife Juana and son Coyotito. Being a simple man he worships the little things in life, he is very connected with the people and nature, he is particularly connected to his canoe that has been passed down to him from his ancestors. Upon finding the pearl, Kino’s’ life changes for the worse. Kino begins to see his future after acquiring the pearl, he sees himself marrying his wife Juana and moving into the town so they could have a better future and his son can have a good education to not live in the way that they did. Also on his wish list was for his family and himself to wear white clothes because that represents purity and a non-labourer life style, having a rifle was his dream because it puts him on the higher colonial status.
Once Kino found the pearl, people ask him what he will do with the money. Keeping
The Pearl went from a shining object to an evil and dark one that needed to be destroyed. When Kino’s house and boat were destroyed Kino became sad and emotional, as we see in this passage, “They sat silently all day in the darkness of the house.” In this time, The Pearl became Kino’s life and everything he was doing involved it as you can see here, “ ‘This pearl has become my soul,’ said Kino. ‘If I give it up I shall lose my soul. ' ” Kino knew The Pearl was only bringing trouble but still wanted to get something out of it so he set off for the capital.
These three characters became greedy after each of them wanted to do something different with the pearl. The doctor wanted to keep the pearl in his safe, probably knowing it was valuable. Kino wanted to keep the pearl whether or not it was bringing evil to his family. Finally, the pearl buyer was attempting to convince Kino that the pearl was worthless and they tried getting the pearl for less money than it was actually worth. Overall, three literary devices were used to describe the greediness of three different characters.
Kino finds an enormous pearl and thinks that it will change his life. It changes his life by causing terror and gives him terrible luck. He becomes greedy and doesn 't care about his family currently, but is thinking about the future if he sells the pearl. People end up finding out that he found a gigantic pearl and try to steal it
When the others became desperate for the pearl Kino had to kill a man in self defense. Kino 's action made him desperate to get away from the town and to
