Day 3(6-7) Thursday In the book so far we see internal conflict, man v. Man, and man v. society. We see this all of these in pages 69-77. On page 77 we see man v. man in the guilt felt by Amir for not Assef from raping Hassan. He is a coward and lies to himself as to why he did not stop him. On pages 69 and 72 we see man v. society in the different answers given by Amir and Hassan when asked about their relationships. While Hassan calls Amir his friend when asked, Amir calls him his servant’s son rather than admit they’re friends. We also see this on page 41 same conflict when Amir wants to say they aren’t friends because of their different social classes even though he considers him almost a brother. “Anything”” is the response he receives. This shows how even after he has ignored him and been rude to him, Hassan is still loyal to Amir and it shows what kind of a person Hassan is. Another important quote is on page 77. “I was afraid of getting hurt. That’s what I told myself as I turned my back to the ally, to Hassan… Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba. This shows how he is willing to sacrifice others for the benefit of himself. He is a coward and an idiot for thinking that this could fix his relationship with his father. Amir’s father says “If I hadn’t seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I’d never believe he was my son.” Hearing this just confirms what Amir has always believed, that he is a disappointment to his father. These chapters surround Amir and his father as they leave the only home they’ve ever known and move to America where they have to start from scratch. It shows how over the years their relationship has grown, and even though it isn’t the relationship Amir always dreamed of, they are closer than before. He conveys this using things such as metaphors and symbolism. He compares America and Afghanistan on page 136. The countries offered him different states of mind and made his father’s life different. The countries also represent their past and future, and how Amir embraces this new life and creating new memories to burry old ones, while his father longs for the past. It also uses imagery to give the reader a real experience while reading it, no matter how heart wrenching or disturbing the image is. The kite is the biggest motif.
