Kreon's Unjust Law In Sophocles Antigone

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In the greek tragedy Antigone, which was written by Sophocles, we see how an unjust ruler can can lead to there being unjust laws and rules. Kreon fits this description, being an unjust ruler that has created unjust laws. This lack of just laws shown by Kreon gets tested when Antigone goes against these unjust laws and decides to take matters into her own hands. We also see a similar situation in the book The Wine of Astonishment, which was written by Earl Lovelace. Here we see Bolo, as well as others, act out against the rules that were placed over them. We will first start with some reasons that caused Kreon to have his position challenged. When Kreon was considered for the crown, he had a sibling that also wanted to have that position of power. To solve the problem, they made a plan that for a specific amount of years Kreon would reign as king and then he would step down the the brother would be able to have his turn as king. When Kreon’s time of reign was up he refused to step down from being in power. The power and authority had consumed him, making him go back on his word, breaking the deal he had made years ago. So the reason anyone even attempted to overthrow him was that he refused to step down when he was supposed too. Due to him going back on what he had originally said he would do, does that not make the actions of his brother not just? He acted in the ways in which he did to force Kreon to respect his side of the agreement. So with that being out there, is it right for Kreon to label him as a traitor and unworthy of a burial if he rebelled in order for the right thing to happen? It could certainly be justified.
